To detonate one secondary explosive, you need a primary explosive within a detonation system.

The workflow for a detonator is:

  1. Arm the detonator, wait for command
  2. Send the command,
  3. Circuitry (charge switch) power the burning “fuse”
  4. Ignite the primary explosive
  5. KABUUUMMM!

Core components:

Microcontroller

  • Process the command and release the signal.
  • Yes, you can use the arduino

Charge Switch

  • Relay (For high voltage or high current power supply).
  • Transistor/Mosfet (For low voltage and low current).

"Fuse"

  • Ignite the primary explosive
  • Nichrome (NiCr) wire (26AWG)
  • The eletric current will heat the wire, the dissipated energy (heat) will ignite the primary explosive

Charge PSU

  • Provides energy to the “Fuse Burn” step.
  • Should be chosen based on the fuse wire material (resistance influence)
  • For Nichrome Wire, an 18V NiCd battery will work.

Main PSU

  • Power Supply for the Microcontroller and peripherals.
  • For arduino, 9v battery.
