1. Application Load Balancer (ALB) → nginx & friends
  2. Network Load Balancer (NLB)

Most of the time, you will deploy an ALB as the mode of choice as a layer 7 load balancer.

There will be exceptions where you need a static IP address or repurposing NLB as a “reverse proxy” and sit in front of the ALB. Thats why you can configure NLB to set an ALB as target group.
